Mary Moose and Abraham Sutherland Share Ojibwe Star Knowledge and Stories

RLNC Traditional Arts Workshops (American Indian College Fund- AICF) 2021-22
To empower community members to learn traditional crafting techniques. They will have the opportunity to learn how to work with birch bark, porcupine quills, and Sweetgrass to create earrings. Additionally, they will learn the art of Black Ash Basket making from start to finish. And lastly, they will also learn the techniques of making Ojibwe style moccasins.
Snowshoe Aagimag Project (American Indian College Fund- AICF) – 2019-20
The purpose of the Aagimag Project is to foster traditional learning through workshops and presentations in which apprentices and community members learn about the process of making snowshoes and stories related to snowshoeing as a traditional Ojibwe winter activity. This project fits well with the newly established RLNC Extension program, which focuses on community mental health through traditional practices and experiential therapy.

Bulrush Mat Weaving (American Indian College Fund- AICF) – 2019
To revive the endangered art of bulrush mat weaving in the Red Lake Nation community. Doreen Wells and Vincent Johnson will lead workshops, teaching the entire process from gathering and processing bulrushes to weaving techniques and creating the final product.

Theater with Rhiana Yazzie (Region 2 Arts Council – MN Legacy Funding) – 2018-19, -2019-20
To empower the students of Red Lake Nation College to create their own original theater production. They will work together to develop a physical theater work on a theme of their choice. This will be the first time that the college students will have the opportunity to showcase their talent and perform their production at the AIHEC competition and for the college and community.

Region 2 Arts Council- MN Legacy Funding
To use creativity, originality & learn unfamiliar welding and plasma torch techniques when several welding students of the Oshkiiimaajitdah (New Beginnings) program collaborate with art students enrolled at the Red Lake Nation College to work with the lead arts / welding instructor(s) at Oshkii to create 2 of seven clans in metal sculpture form.
